A well-known discounter of household and electrical goods in Germany advertises with the slogan “Geiz ist geil” (thrift is cool). That may well apply to articles of the same type and function which can be bought on any street corner and which require little or no service. Yet when selecting creative minds, whether it be detectives, advertising agencies or the like, price should not be a criterion of choice. Performance alone decides over success, this necessarily being dependent on experience, a wealth of ideas and, without doubt, routine. We do not need to labour the Old Testament here with the insight “Some buy cheaply and must then pay the price seven fold”, there are other quotes, such as:
Quality has its price (common saying); Once you say you're going to settle for second, that's what happens to you in life, I find. (John F. Kennedy);
Cheap ends up expensive in the long run (Helmut Peters, sociologist & publicist);
Whoever buys cheaply will nearly always pay a high price for it (Helmut Peters, sociologist & publicist);
It can be said that whoever buys cheaply will end up with accordingly cheap goods/services (source unknown);
Only he who really invests will obtain comparable value in return (source unknown).
Thus where it is precisely creativity, experience and routine that are required, a simple comparison of fees can have an unhappy ending. Whoever commissions the former store detective to perform professional observations or even conduct special inquiries will end up with a “black eye”. An observation mission that is noticed brings nothing. Investigations that end without a tangible result have been in vain! No detective has the proverbial crystal ball to solve a problem out of the blue. Well-founded specialist knowledge, experience, a methodical approach, technical equipment and, not least, first-class sources of information are necessary. Yet these all require a certain expenditure, as everyone understands.
The Chinese say “Maturity is the sum of experience”. Some clients who chose their detective solely on the criterion of fees were subsequently richer only in bitter experience and poorer by the money spent fruitlessly. Each client should therefore give extensive consideration to which detective agency they commission to solve a personal problem!
